Ms. Jacoby's Second Grade

Background: While working with some scrapbooking materials for a school project, I found some quotes about autumn. I really liked them (see below) and they provided "the seeds of thinking" about this Online Autumn Project.

"Autumn is a second spring where every leaf is a flower." - Albert Camus

"For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad."
- Edwin Way Teale

“Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree” - Emily Bronte

"Autumn, the year's last, loveliest smile." - William Cullen Bryant

“Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.” - Stanley Horowitz

--- Our Work for the Project ---

  • First we discussed the Autumn season in class.
  • In our next lesson, we talked about the use of quotation marks, and looked for them in our reading.
  • After that we discussed quotes, and read and thought about the examples above.
  • Children then had a "Family Homework" assignment - to spend some time observing the Autumn season together. They then needed to create a "family quote" about the season.
  • Back at school we shared the quotes, then typed them (originally I tried to have them written in the children's own handwriting, but we had size constraints, and that becaame a problem, so we decided to type them.)
  • We used watercolors in Autumn shades to create our backgrounds. We also drew borders in pencil, which we outlined in sharpie, and painted those, as well.
  • I experimented with to create a book which we may purchase (see below).
  • I am also experimenting with so that all of the children's wonderful work can be read in their own voices.
